Kinetic Typography

Kinetic Typography:

The technical name for 'moving text'. It is an animation technique mixing motion and text to express ideas using video animation. This text is presented over time in a manner intended to convey or evoke a particular idea or emotion.

Learning After Effects CC

I was fairly new to after effects when we were given this task at university. I chose to expand my skills by not only animating the text, but also playing with movements of the camera in 3D virtual space.

The clip above shows the finished project. Its based around a short scene in Dawn of the planet of the apes in which the human first hear Caesar speak. Planet of the apes is my favourite film franchise and I think the dialogue in this scene in particular carries a lot of weight even though very little is said. The overall look and feel of the video borrows from the movie poster for the film (see right), using colours from the apes face paint and some use of the ‘apes font’.
